History

Cedric Alvin Boyes began his career working in an ammunition plant in Nobel, Ontario during World War 2. After the war, he worked as a laborer in the construction of a prison in Monteith, Ontario. It was then his passion for building would overflow into establishing his own company, C.A. Boyes & Sons Construction Ltd, in his hometown, Sundridge, Ontario.

During his early years, C.A. Boyes & Sons built Caswell’s Resort in Sundridge and one in Sault St. Marie. C.A. Boyes & Sons continued to build many local business and residential homes in the area.

C.A. had two sons, Don & Dennis. They soon joined C.A. on the job-sites as employees and eventually became partners. They continued the family business until Don’s oldest son Michael took over in 2003.

Town Officials Gather about the Corner Stone

LAYING THE CORNER STONE: officials connected with the construction of the new Sundridge, Strong and Joly Community Centre and the Arena took part in the laying of the corner stone of the new building. The stone donated by Sanderson Monument of Orillia is shown being installed by building committee chairman Ray Anderson, while municipal reeves, left to right, look on: Roger Brimacombe, Strong Township; Harold Hill, Sundridge and K. Sundridge Community Centre

BEGINNING TO TAKE SHAPE: The Sundridge Community Centre is beginning to take shape. as work crews are kept busy to meet the now extended December 31st deadline. The structure will replace the former centre lost to fire in January of 1979. The building which will house municipal offices, library, hydro office, council chambers and senior citizen meeting rooms is under construction by C. A. Boyes of Sundridge.

Trusses being placed on the Sundridge Arena

IN PLACE: The steel roof trusses on the Sundridge, Strong and Joly Community Hall and Arena were set into place last week. The building is beginning to take its final shape. The found raising committee has collected $58,325.60 to date, with over $85,000 in pledges. The goal is $149,000.  Meanwhile, at the arena, construction is moving on schedule with some areas ahead of schedule. Shown in photo is one of the steel trusses being set in place.

Johnston's New IGA Supermarket

IT’S OFFICIAL: After Sundridge reeve Harold Hill cut the official ribbon at the opening of Johnstone’s new IGA supermarket the doors were opened and the flood of customers began. The ceremony took place on Thursday, January 19. Shown in photo taking part in the official ribbon cutting from left, Mrs. Fred Johnstone, C.A. Boyes, contractor; Bob Johnstone, co-owner; Harold Hill, Sundridge Reeve; Dave Johnstone, who ran the grocery store on Main Street in Sundridge for many years. The opening day crowd was one of the largest IGA officials had seen at any of their store openings.  

Old Village Arena being torn down to make space for the New One

COMING DOWN: While residents of the South River area were celebrating the official opening of their arena and community centre, residents of Sundridge were bidding a sad farewell to that village’s arena. The demolition is in its last week of operation on the arena. Construction on a new $700,000 structure is expected to begin as soon as the old one is down. The new building is hoped to be completed by October of this year. Shown in the photo is the crew removing the last few feet of roofing from the front of the arena. Our CA Boyes and Sons construction crew works from the Strong Township.
